Royal Gorge to Fowler, Colo. - July 14

We rode 95 miles today. It began with a glorious 7-mile descent into Canon City, unspoiled by any wind. The sun was shining through to where the town is in that one photo.

We ate Subway breakfast sandwiches and later, in Pueblo, we ate Subway for lunch. We love Subway because it is quick and inexpensive and they often have Powerade among the fountain drinks, which means free refills.

We were really getting out of the hills going into Pueblo. They were behind us and it looked like a lot of nothing ahead of us. Dad had a slow leak in his tire and fixed it at our lunch stop in Pueblo, shortly after we passed the 2,000-mile mark of the trip.

After Pueblo, it became flat, flat, flat. It was interesting when the train went by but otherwise it is a lot of the same thing. I'd like to come up with some kind of thought project, the kind of thing you hear about POWs having to keep from going crazy: like plot a novel, design a house or try to think of the very first conversation I had with all the people I know.

It was also pretty hot today, in the mid 90s, although not as sickly oppressive as heat in Lancaster since this was dry. But still.

We're camping in an RV Park next to a kids' playground and some railroad tracks. The kids are done playing but
there will likely be some trains tonight.

Tomorrow we plan to ride to Eads, which would be our last overnight stop in Colorado.
