Fowler to Eads - July 15

We rode 80 miles today, beginning soon after 6 a.m. Overnight I heard quite a few trains on the nearby track, but I still slept pretty well.

Starting out, the riding was incredible; the kind of riding you dream about on the plains: it was cool with a slight tailwind, making it feel like nothing to cruise along at 18 mph. Then, at some points, 20 mph was a piece of cake. My continuous thought was, "this is awesome."

The scenery is brutally spare: a flat, brown landscape with brown grass and very few towns, cars or people.

It did start to get hot later on, in the mid 90s probably. It wasn't until the last 10 miles into Eads that we had any troubling winds, but it was windy enough to tarnish the memory of the first 70 miles. The wind blows from the south, so it is from our right, although sometimes it seemed to be coming straight at us. Plus, in the afternoon, it is a hot wind, so it dries you out.

We arrived around 1:30 and the wind has picked up since then. We're staying in the city park in Eads, but since it is Sunday, the only thing open is the convenience store, so I've been eating plastic-wrapped sandwiches, chips and candy bars. (One perk of the trip is that I can eat pretty much anything I want, since it is impossible to gain weight.)

We plan to go to Leoti tomorrow, although we may go further if conditions are favorable.

Since the morning riding is so pleasant and the afternoon riding is so abhorrent, we plan to start as early as possible, probably around 5:30.
