Our twin sons were 15 and our youngest son had just turned 12. When our dream for this trip first came to life, we were not a biking family, but we wanted to build a lasting memory for our family. That youngest son and I are now retracing the route we took 25 years ago and hopefully will be building even more memories.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.comBlogger89125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-35608408684106484192012-08-19T05:01:00.001-07:002012-08-19T06:33:40.328-07:00York Furnace to New Holland, Pa. - Aug. 18Since it has become a deeply ingrained habit, I started from Otter Creek Campground as soon as it got light. It had rained overnight but I was dry since I was allowed to set my tent up under a pavilion. I'm glad I didn't have to get wet on my last night.<br />
<br />
There a were some hills along the river, but after I crossed over to Columbia, it was a straight, flat ride to Lancaster. I stopped by my house, talked to my tenants and did a little much-needed yard work before heading on.<br />
<br />
I stopped at my brother's house in Leola and then we went to Brady's Pub in New Holland where I saw my niece and nephew. From there, we all went to the New Holland Pool for some afternoon swimming with my brothers and their kids.<br />
<br />
At this point, the riding was pretty much done, but the actual, final miles were only logged in the early evening to my parents' house in New Holland. By the end, I had 51 miles for the day and 4,621 for the entire trip.<br />
<br />
(I won't go back to my house until after Labor Day when my subletter moves out if my apartment.)<br />
<br />
So, what do I make of the trip? <br />
<br />
It was cool to dust off memories of the 1987 trip. I got to know a lot about that trip by looking at old pictures, reading old journals and listening to tapes my mom made back then.<br />
<br />
At first, I was more aware of what had happened on the 1987 trip, but as this one went along, I thought less about that and more about the current one. After my dad's accident, this trip became pre-eminent, having gotten an unexpected -- and unwanted-- drama.<br />
<br />
For most of the trip, we didn't have major problems, but there were still daily, physical challenges as well as tests of mental toughness. <br />
<br />
After getting out of the mountains of the West, we rode through some unconscionable heat, with afternoon temps hitting 107, or so. That's when we began riding at the break of day, which let us at least have some pleasant riding before being overtaken by the afternoon oven.<br />
<br />
When I was on my own, I dealt with some new problems, including rain and a poorly-timed flat tire as well as the time my seat came apart and I had to figure out how to get it fixed. (A fortunately-located auto garage was the solution.)<br />
<br />
Constantly having to deal with problems helped me adopt something of a "ho-hum" attitude toward hardships. <br />
<br />
We heard a lot about how terrible upcoming hills were, but it did little good to think about it until you were actually climbing it. Or, worrying about the wind didn't accomplish anything; when the winds blew, we just kept riding.<br />
<br />
In each situation, the solution was murky beforehand, but became apparent right in the middle of the problem. The main thing to do was actually quite simple: keep going.<br />
<br />
In some commentary for a slide presentation about the first trip, my mom talked about having a "treasure chest of memories," with the bike trip being a way to add to that treasure chest. That experience in 1987 stuck with me long enough to want to do it again, and now I've got a whole lot of new memories that, as my mom said, I can "take out, and savor for a while."<br />
<br />
<br />

In all, I rode 106 miles and am staying at campground on the York side of the Susquehanna River, near Safe Harbor Dam. <br />
<br />
I figured that this would be my last chance to ride big miles in a day, to try to test myself a little at the end of this long trip. It was cool to start biking in the early light in downtown D.C. and end up just 16 miles from Columbia.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I'll have maybe 50 miles of real riding and then I'll hang around at the houses of my family members. (I sublet my own apartment through August, so I can't go back there just yet.)<br />
<br />
So, the trip will end tomorrow. I'll then do one more post with a few closing thoughts.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEg2Bvhfp9e5aFuPWvQ5_k1H80fOooAdL0_c8QCKIB4wENlO9Gv_Aw1TCzgSqsU1Kq4yN9Jsh0Z1w1xxYPCRGX0cIztWZaZjg9Bs-TZjKVLLgsOVdwBqUnOy3aCaZvfxdtL8X6sfHV-3h/s640/blogger-image-2092228926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEg2Bvhfp9e5aFuPWvQ5_k1H80fOooAdL0_c8QCKIB4wENlO9Gv_Aw1TCzgSqsU1Kq4yN9Jsh0Z1w1xxYPCRGX0cIztWZaZjg9Bs-TZjKVLLgsOVdwBqUnOy3aCaZvfxdtL8X6sfHV-3h/s640/blogger-image-2092228926.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfrtSf-uF86lEuMSuxcwf9BByeUyDZo_svnDC6aMTcnyogy16v3hfSW3Oi58Aahus7MPOwkPu229gkdqR-RQXTJEeqkO8eIKfOBh-w1XIlRJd4fGb8xXx9nz-sMr5dhW6ViiSi_WLBWOo-/s640/blogger-image-85599548.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfrtSf-uF86lEuMSuxcwf9BByeUyDZo_svnDC6aMTcnyogy16v3hfSW3Oi58Aahus7MPOwkPu229gkdqR-RQXTJEeqkO8eIKfOBh-w1XIlRJd4fGb8xXx9nz-sMr5dhW6ViiSi_WLBWOo-/s640/blogger-image-85599548.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwVJsLc3KxLZAxP05GBRhMf7cz9kFp5ie1b1Ozjila9Bv1YUhH0CI92-62V9nXOliJhgjrkVXEd4-znkCTIAsvtCqqwpxu0zf4Vz3RralUAyD7fJSS81k8FOvegdHA6n2suVHh45AW2Ekb/s640/blogger-image-551648425.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwVJsLc3KxLZAxP05GBRhMf7cz9kFp5ie1b1Ozjila9Bv1YUhH0CI92-62V9nXOliJhgjrkVXEd4-znkCTIAsvtCqqwpxu0zf4Vz3RralUAyD7fJSS81k8FOvegdHA6n2suVHh45AW2Ekb/s640/blogger-image-551648425.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-48800454842475683442012-08-16T14:24:00.001-07:002012-08-16T14:31:43.712-07:00Fredericksburg to D.C.I had a nearly 90-mile day into D.C. It was neat to ride in some familiar areas since I used to live in both Northern Virginia and D.C. All of this bike riding really is bringing me back home! <br />
<br />
Tonight I'm staying in a hostel in downtown, just blocks from where I worked, lo those many years ago. <br />
<br />
It was neat to ride on the bike route through this area since it took me through familiar territory, but along some roads I'd never bern on. I biked through Quantico and Fort Belvoir military bases as well as along a bike path along the Potomac River.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I plan to bike to Baltimore, and from there the next day will probably get me to the border of Lancaster County, if not in it.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfi0Yupc6n_9gDx9KGYGeTuoSweaWEDl5XHFZ3BYe6TGV-sY5c0BSj_dHoK5JKl1_yVls9pkxI0qhyphenhyphenUmvuUKNrPzZDK9FW8a983NtyoOZzSbnhfU3uHtFpc4ZCukAcu2ZstHBi-RgmBtbh/s640/blogger-image--190114849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfi0Yupc6n_9gDx9KGYGeTuoSweaWEDl5XHFZ3BYe6TGV-sY5c0BSj_dHoK5JKl1_yVls9pkxI0qhyphenhyphenUmvuUKNrPzZDK9FW8a983NtyoOZzSbnhfU3uHtFpc4ZCukAcu2ZstHBi-RgmBtbh/s640/blogger-image--190114849.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPcopWiBG-m-8Mhyiu42OX23nJfkq1Qka_8alw9vnTsS5CA3hkBsf97sHw8nUmnuDbXWPQK5tagqru6b_A0x2eDgxQDbXkKCn4AQaJT17S5DndqVoMOueOYYNuV2_J85PznjZAEcqFEAEi/s640/blogger-image-1725765500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPcopWiBG-m-8Mhyiu42OX23nJfkq1Qka_8alw9vnTsS5CA3hkBsf97sHw8nUmnuDbXWPQK5tagqru6b_A0x2eDgxQDbXkKCn4AQaJT17S5DndqVoMOueOYYNuV2_J85PznjZAEcqFEAEi/s640/blogger-image-1725765500.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-42358487334465185322012-08-15T12:55:00.001-07:002012-08-15T12:57:15.884-07:00Ashland to Fredericksburg, Va.I had a short, 65-mile day that included some rolling hills, but nothing too serious. Because there wasn't lodging for nearly 50 miles beyond Fredericksburg, I'm staying there. Also, because I was here by noon, the only camping was "primitive", and there is a threat of serious thunderstorms, I got a hotel room. Plus, I have so much time to kill today, that I didn't want to just hang around outside for 9 hours until it was time for bed.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I plan to ride into Washington D.C. I used to live there, but all my friends, except one, have moved away. Unfortunately, as it turns out, she is away, so I'll be staying in a hostel.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu24K8LPbbh_1xmtcUnwTplOaxtxfMDNLT0kIS4ZIwb3Glug_xKq6kne6XXKBCAQcM0q51h-j2pYzGVrSPRhu-13WPsdoTlRs7kKmet4byxi9JbNjwjSTx3GB15uOCegaa4vIsDvlLGFr-/s640/blogger-image-60059902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu24K8LPbbh_1xmtcUnwTplOaxtxfMDNLT0kIS4ZIwb3Glug_xKq6kne6XXKBCAQcM0q51h-j2pYzGVrSPRhu-13WPsdoTlRs7kKmet4byxi9JbNjwjSTx3GB15uOCegaa4vIsDvlLGFr-/s640/blogger-image-60059902.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1NJog13jFxVkM7F35Zs8lxC6rY32ph6xJwMgDepp2btrK48IBgGAjBEHGD7mGUBqDEVWoGyo5z2rJmqrKjT6LTMh-xRDL9tVMmOGxaZcVxbElagecF5Lj7g0mM-uO5PN3FyzDQo9YfSX/s640/blogger-image-445922084.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1NJog13jFxVkM7F35Zs8lxC6rY32ph6xJwMgDepp2btrK48IBgGAjBEHGD7mGUBqDEVWoGyo5z2rJmqrKjT6LTMh-xRDL9tVMmOGxaZcVxbElagecF5Lj7g0mM-uO5PN3FyzDQo9YfSX/s640/blogger-image-445922084.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-42483150407060094822012-08-14T11:23:00.001-07:002012-08-14T11:23:34.982-07:00Chickahominy to Ashland, Va.I backtracked to Ashland, covering some 65 miles by noon. I'm now staying at the KOA that I stayed at three nights ago. In fact, I'm staying in the same site, but instead of anticipating a ride to Yorktown, I'll be heading north tomorrow, towards home.<br />
<br />
I had been thinking about lollygagging my way home, but now think I'll just keep going at my normal pace. Tomorrow I plan to go to Fredericksburg since there are few lodging options anywhere else.<br />
<br />
It felt familiar to be riding again today, but also strange since "The Trip" is already completed. I'm no longer someone who is biking across the U.S., but someone who has. (I don't know how to italicize things on the iPhone, but just imagine that "is" and "has" were in italics in that last sentence.)<br />
<br />
The ride today included various markers for Civil War battlefields.<br />

It was fun to watch Chad, Keith and Alex enjoy the last 13 miles together. <br />
<br />
<br />
It was somewhat difficult not being on my bike to enjoy the feeling of completing the coast to coast ride. I came short 650 miles of completing the ride. Chad and I did rode for 3575 miles together with many wonderful memories. Each day we were ready to start and enjoy the ride. The days that we started at first light in the morning to beat the heat were fun. Each new day I looked forward to the adventures of another day.<br />
<br />
Thanks Chad for a great ride. Thanks, for waiting for me at the top of all those hills. Thanks for allowing me to "suck wheel" on those many miles across Kansas or when we had a head wind. It was nice to have you making decisions about how far to ride, where to stay and keeping us on the route. <br />
<br />
The 56 days on the road with Chad are full of memories that will be talked about for years. It was fun reliving the trip of 25 years ago and finding spots and things we did on the first ride.<br />

Mom and dad followed in the van, stopping to take pictures and videos of us along the way.<br />
<br />
At the Yorktown Victory Memorial, which commemorates the final surrender by the British in the Revolutionary War and marks the end of the bike route, we took various photos, some of which were recreating photos from 25 years ago. <br />
<br />
I was glad dad and the others were there, but having dad there on crutches brought back how disappointing it was that we weren't able to finish the trip together. It really was bittersweet to be at the spot we'd been imagining for so long and have him be there on crutches. But the trip really is more than just the end, and the only part he missed was the Appalachians, which were wildly overhyped by the riders we met going west.<br />
<br />
While Yorktown marks the official end of the trip, I'll be continuing back to Lancaster. I'll be following part of an Adventure Cycling route that goes from Maine to Florida.<br />
<br />
After Yorktown, I backtracked to Chickahominy Riverfront park, giving me just over 40 miles total. Tomorrow I plan to ride back to Ashland and that KOA, continuing north from there.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYef6pZ-n7celgzcYYsRFPwS_5YIDsL7qMCG1jNbzU9uLQK3mSWFYwrbpFrW3derct_kCgMpfRMuWSf3WuL1QbWPZZOUPaqrlcq5RV-4xE10H_4DkMGqk6DcA7cwe-cJI25Ljb6-0sZb-d/s640/blogger-image-653323547.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I had been expecting to meet up with Keith, Alex and my parents short of Williamsburg, but then just rode all the way there and met them at a hotel. When it was all said and done, I had ridden nearly 90 miles. <br />
<br />
Dad and I got caught up on how the trip has been since I last saw him in an ambulance in Booneville, Ky.<br />
<br />
Keith and Alex are going to be riding the last 12 miles to Yorktown with me tomorrow. As you can see, everyone is resting up for that.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIuHwSt_iBANv3j2NdoFJDvhCxOawpzDuvDY1zmDSn-ygnW21IbQlD6lEnvJNhLztqRVipNMqEWwT1CtmKDwFjrprp3sthco3ZSJhBjj-EyuD16l_DCqfp-i_uG-Axj0SxQuqHT0EiMQOj/s640/blogger-image--813427530.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIuHwSt_iBANv3j2NdoFJDvhCxOawpzDuvDY1zmDSn-ygnW21IbQlD6lEnvJNhLztqRVipNMqEWwT1CtmKDwFjrprp3sthco3ZSJhBjj-EyuD16l_DCqfp-i_uG-Axj0SxQuqHT0EiMQOj/s640/blogger-image--813427530.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje4d5hxk7gFSDZWu3UPQzxeEwkHQBpw_xJk7CgYLpu0HKuwRrQ6kW32Jb5fdnbx_cdPsoIxuxeQmOyS7greASO7jFyDCRANOSgkXvB2pFiY-kOWp-SYYgdsHXjUgRoPHDs_75eale3ix8o/s640/blogger-image-1193801641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje4d5hxk7gFSDZWu3UPQzxeEwkHQBpw_xJk7CgYLpu0HKuwRrQ6kW32Jb5fdnbx_cdPsoIxuxeQmOyS7greASO7jFyDCRANOSgkXvB2pFiY-kOWp-SYYgdsHXjUgRoPHDs_75eale3ix8o/s640/blogger-image-1193801641.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ETBu85Pt7wqQYZ1RVQu9tlvCrAtbz8OBUMeGkxHTTkftxkVwEydn9HzYegku5d5pZXlv1crOLyJJdTfpoFtX1XoR9m9gb9M4u0CWTNjWx9C07hLZXBE9-g3AXUURRZv4ZF2AgRyogsOR/s640/blogger-image--2036145516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ETBu85Pt7wqQYZ1RVQu9tlvCrAtbz8OBUMeGkxHTTkftxkVwEydn9HzYegku5d5pZXlv1crOLyJJdTfpoFtX1XoR9m9gb9M4u0CWTNjWx9C07hLZXBE9-g3AXUURRZv4ZF2AgRyogsOR/s640/blogger-image--2036145516.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-70365206301877030382012-08-11T14:14:00.001-07:002012-08-11T14:16:46.935-07:00Charlottesville to Ashland, Va. - Aug. 10Today's ride was largely uneventful -- thankfully so! The big hills are behind me so it was small hills through fields and forested sections. It was cloudy, but never rained, which also meant it never got really hot. I took a small shortcut, saving about 20 miles. In all, I rode just over 80 miles today.<br />
<br />
I'm staying at a KOA near Ashland and I-95. It was only $9 for a tent, which is cheap for a KOA. <br />
<br />
The end is very much in sight. That prospect feels strange. While I plan to ride back up to Lancaster, that seems like just a postscript to "The Trip," which will draw to a close on Sunday.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I plan to ride to a campground 30 miles short of Yorktown, setting myself up for a ceremonial, final day.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_xnwsgpHD2wz9uAPHKPErFzB7Iny01qbLphuhQeG2qSQi76q10y3hbjrKtkD21_RFgylWTgz6rPsRed7YgVmzWVy-VEYUuz0JCtrTo_LxKLkBKnz8CVpFD4fS7EiVPQwc6gNUgQtDc5F/s640/blogger-image-1537485065.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_xnwsgpHD2wz9uAPHKPErFzB7Iny01qbLphuhQeG2qSQi76q10y3hbjrKtkD21_RFgylWTgz6rPsRed7YgVmzWVy-VEYUuz0JCtrTo_LxKLkBKnz8CVpFD4fS7EiVPQwc6gNUgQtDc5F/s640/blogger-image-1537485065.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBo4sHwzmIJO0v6VoEd_l4nhDF2nFPFNc4YsNxnoPQ44GnnYUHYCS-9Bmwghe0BpLBaU0EhQkTJiTuxfVTgX5kbqnLETDL3rre3ZME0fURkA0Jlbtcyt5P0y-F-VQkLNnyg6FkGKl0DfVi/s640/blogger-image--885758886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBo4sHwzmIJO0v6VoEd_l4nhDF2nFPFNc4YsNxnoPQ44GnnYUHYCS-9Bmwghe0BpLBaU0EhQkTJiTuxfVTgX5kbqnLETDL3rre3ZME0fURkA0Jlbtcyt5P0y-F-VQkLNnyg6FkGKl0DfVi/s640/blogger-image--885758886.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1lD6N9rg0a_cgCoAIzfBbB8KdxSTiRAfSvGQsCmbNuB0rPngtbxmP4s3KYSbwrR_t2mWpmCz8OyU78sTuv9pd-IbTcApFhJ-EHQ3-r50pUvxk5LaMLAqyEo8vycGYZyZEKkxJ6NSRmG9k/s640/blogger-image--578502613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1lD6N9rg0a_cgCoAIzfBbB8KdxSTiRAfSvGQsCmbNuB0rPngtbxmP4s3KYSbwrR_t2mWpmCz8OyU78sTuv9pd-IbTcApFhJ-EHQ3-r50pUvxk5LaMLAqyEo8vycGYZyZEKkxJ6NSRmG9k/s640/blogger-image--578502613.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-61910569458915881342012-08-10T17:24:00.001-07:002012-08-10T17:31:10.902-07:00Afton to Chatlottesville, Va. - Aug. 10I left kinda late -- around 9:30 -- because it was pretty foggy on the mountain. Once I got down, it seemed to clear up, although it was still cloudy and slightly threatening.<br />
<br />
I only rode 32 miles to Charlottesville where I'm staying with Reuben Miller and Holly Scott, who I know from EMU, and other places. We went out to dinner and when we came back, these foreboding clouds were moving in, and then it started raining. I felt glad to be inside. <br />
<br />
I plan to ride to Ashland tomorrow. From there, it will be less than 100 miles to Yorktown.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIC8zkuOTiK3k1iuZW46M4dF8Jyf9498GWLyOlyW1Ywt9Dk-iARJTUXXuoflhCGSN78bAwANXStuimWmlf0pv681cyp1Xeh1fF7dTLCkDpsZ0CciLJQCM7Aos130hIawWkwsxo5HWIe_uZ/s640/blogger-image-1805162226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIC8zkuOTiK3k1iuZW46M4dF8Jyf9498GWLyOlyW1Ywt9Dk-iARJTUXXuoflhCGSN78bAwANXStuimWmlf0pv681cyp1Xeh1fF7dTLCkDpsZ0CciLJQCM7Aos130hIawWkwsxo5HWIe_uZ/s640/blogger-image-1805162226.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRcuxEQQ3CSU2YJL7CzX09IrubEiON73DjkwjsRySrRyKZLoWvs7mggnwJgZahn5M2D-Z90FdyfIRcltHMwOodIso5YP_gAGeAi-pwFN4hYWIqw1noYR7SDIGxPSE78rGnCf__RJrzGBv/s640/blogger-image-460781642.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRcuxEQQ3CSU2YJL7CzX09IrubEiON73DjkwjsRySrRyKZLoWvs7mggnwJgZahn5M2D-Z90FdyfIRcltHMwOodIso5YP_gAGeAi-pwFN4hYWIqw1noYR7SDIGxPSE78rGnCf__RJrzGBv/s640/blogger-image-460781642.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKcqQGv7SNnskPtSrZqnCTaScHBEw-YQUNF_SSaihQPG2bSXGxBk2pgTkXpT3lvZAhLZAHxIYkZSTzARlTGUpX311R_6b2WJigRMKDo30uSdXvgrqCecEm4CydzXeecdemULWpM73FXe-2/s640/blogger-image-1716042615.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKcqQGv7SNnskPtSrZqnCTaScHBEw-YQUNF_SSaihQPG2bSXGxBk2pgTkXpT3lvZAhLZAHxIYkZSTzARlTGUpX311R_6b2WJigRMKDo30uSdXvgrqCecEm4CydzXeecdemULWpM73FXe-2/s640/blogger-image-1716042615.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_F6ch8BAHNrxnS-me4A3KsIvDKQ29TOjcX6KWEBMBFBvCLiUhIPTIuQePKLkcmTsBpBHkBc3yp_cnSvWb_Z0dprYv1RPBWjMy7j7yG0UMebXi307pX2DwSX3pn2KBYvmgVxxs1ZtiNg_X/s640/blogger-image-1142039658.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_F6ch8BAHNrxnS-me4A3KsIvDKQ29TOjcX6KWEBMBFBvCLiUhIPTIuQePKLkcmTsBpBHkBc3yp_cnSvWb_Z0dprYv1RPBWjMy7j7yG0UMebXi307pX2DwSX3pn2KBYvmgVxxs1ZtiNg_X/s640/blogger-image-1142039658.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7VA1TbOPq6iTfHy0BlqP0Cy_itnlaTE6Wlm0kNiDhQFJsk51iyM49OdpcWLhOaNX320lJHhfcD7gQuF45yhsAkV-U5aKOWaGnHWCMMUxW8rYF30wCAX0aOjUc6mIhfsTrUwqdULYfJcm_/s640/blogger-image--2025580387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7VA1TbOPq6iTfHy0BlqP0Cy_itnlaTE6Wlm0kNiDhQFJsk51iyM49OdpcWLhOaNX320lJHhfcD7gQuF45yhsAkV-U5aKOWaGnHWCMMUxW8rYF30wCAX0aOjUc6mIhfsTrUwqdULYfJcm_/s640/blogger-image--2025580387.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-25775509639136155212012-08-09T16:36:00.001-07:002012-08-09T17:14:55.135-07:00Troutville to Afton, Va. - Aug. 9I had a short day planned, hoping to camp in Vesuvius, which is at the bottom of a steep climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. <br />
<br />
In 1987, we got rained on along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I noticed that there was a chance of rain tomorrow. Looked like history might repeat itself. <br />
<br />
The early riding was smooth: some of it was along I-81 and some was through hilly farmland. I stopped at a coffee shop in Lexington to kill some time. But I was still approaching my destination at 1 p.m. The only place to stay was in a field behind a grocery store and I was starting to think I'd possibly have a long, possibly wet stay there.<br />
<br />
Suddenly, I started to entertain the idea of riding up to the parkway today, instead of waiting a day. By the time I was nearing Vesuvius, I had decided to keep going up to the parkway.<br />
<br />
Then, my seat came apart. The bolt that holds it together sheared right off and pieces fell into the road. It wasn't clear how to fix the situation. I rode -- without sitting down -- about 3 miles into Vesuvius. Fortunately, there was a garage there and I took my bolt and my problem to them. They matter-of-factly got the sheared bolt end loosened and gave me a new one I could use: no charge. It felt like a lucky break.<br />
<br />
With that problem solved, I began the climb. As you can see from the elevation profile, the hill is steep. It barely lets up and I often had to stand up just to keep going. <br />
<br />
This hill deserves its reputation among cyclists: it was the toughest hill of the whole trip, although it was harder because I did it in the afternoon, having already ridden 65 miles.<br />
<br />
Once up on the parkway, there were still some hills, but some of them were down. I decided to ride to Afton, which is at the end of the parkway, rewarding myself with a hotel room with a view. In all, I rode 96 miles.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I only have maybe 35 miles to Charlottesville where I'll be staying with some college friends.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4qZVActamzzaQMQzzxbQCiNZ0O6UpdDEe493kOo16ku_D8jm5uTTG6q5on83D-Ki0MetgQnMDysDGsBd7vZc-EUr2NaaZtR-bNvmU_cbWsMNiBnbAkDhgVgLnvjVQFhoQ8NEvSg66EbMw/s640/blogger-image-988135725.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4qZVActamzzaQMQzzxbQCiNZ0O6UpdDEe493kOo16ku_D8jm5uTTG6q5on83D-Ki0MetgQnMDysDGsBd7vZc-EUr2NaaZtR-bNvmU_cbWsMNiBnbAkDhgVgLnvjVQFhoQ8NEvSg66EbMw/s640/blogger-image-988135725.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fiwEwUoeXs75qDnBgnpxtbb542PZZsPNmfEDKWvZHxkAWXAmoQqKKioNSSeN8gn7b7jLyWc7x2_rjMmDFbF9yJAV_1peyQcgGk93CB2USNf4P7acI2h8Ne6zrya6Xj711UGMcs0Eix5z/s640/blogger-image-1713625747.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fiwEwUoeXs75qDnBgnpxtbb542PZZsPNmfEDKWvZHxkAWXAmoQqKKioNSSeN8gn7b7jLyWc7x2_rjMmDFbF9yJAV_1peyQcgGk93CB2USNf4P7acI2h8Ne6zrya6Xj711UGMcs0Eix5z/s640/blogger-image-1713625747.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiawKiRzTi0QzTOIbUkYrCB1B910CKUNsFdQg7VkswagKXsMsaA-N2eSWevBJTc2mTasgm_e59Rnwy_EEpKJX_ZWJDJuXkdZDY4ZM0Zt1zR6IsTvU8X0uMtSnp78eF8T4vqWCG3lZl5x_7R/s640/blogger-image--1538900127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiawKiRzTi0QzTOIbUkYrCB1B910CKUNsFdQg7VkswagKXsMsaA-N2eSWevBJTc2mTasgm_e59Rnwy_EEpKJX_ZWJDJuXkdZDY4ZM0Zt1zR6IsTvU8X0uMtSnp78eF8T4vqWCG3lZl5x_7R/s640/blogger-image--1538900127.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNU6HD7NLKyyLg4UNDe5SrZBBEGwwyWuSaW21FWYuMVj45yJevAJnq5g743kkd2jEDfx-cNYjcFUC5_rn-0yQoiCIfIjeWuxpJEFX9vjBAVb9Wgm7RjEcsfF4a8GvT9rq_rljxdZSEQYr/s640/blogger-image-452699235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNU6HD7NLKyyLg4UNDe5SrZBBEGwwyWuSaW21FWYuMVj45yJevAJnq5g743kkd2jEDfx-cNYjcFUC5_rn-0yQoiCIfIjeWuxpJEFX9vjBAVb9Wgm7RjEcsfF4a8GvT9rq_rljxdZSEQYr/s640/blogger-image-452699235.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4g_MMG1iPLjXlI8CXMVB6s-te-9YN4lsbwSwMFr6rsQxty6ZYrtXhRvhEigK_Nb95mkP2AWtseRLmXOuTJUqFv-sfuYPC9Fiy8oXxGTWyoJkhytvUC4473QOLhQ9duSJsdGwFStUPLyLP/s640/blogger-image-795814550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4g_MMG1iPLjXlI8CXMVB6s-te-9YN4lsbwSwMFr6rsQxty6ZYrtXhRvhEigK_Nb95mkP2AWtseRLmXOuTJUqFv-sfuYPC9Fiy8oXxGTWyoJkhytvUC4473QOLhQ9duSJsdGwFStUPLyLP/s640/blogger-image-795814550.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOapcZcAKpEp39DzTpb-No9JVuvQnSU2uvnfbShmKxFlcaUbB1udsffJrfY4nwPDjvm4Oqi9Jz8YJ5nutdg8U3ywwnxr5Wbep0pzUrP7X8GAPqDX26IDOHHG_9lmW4x36QowqIok57LvT0/s640/blogger-image--509047583.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOapcZcAKpEp39DzTpb-No9JVuvQnSU2uvnfbShmKxFlcaUbB1udsffJrfY4nwPDjvm4Oqi9Jz8YJ5nutdg8U3ywwnxr5Wbep0pzUrP7X8GAPqDX26IDOHHG_9lmW4x36QowqIok57LvT0/s640/blogger-image--509047583.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-33941575776948401952012-08-08T15:50:00.001-07:002012-08-08T15:50:30.421-07:00Max Meadows to Troutville, Va. - Aug. 8I was up early and waited for about 30 minutes until it was light enough to ride. The morning fog settled into the valleys in an eerie way. The ride tracked I-81 through Christiansburg and then went north through some mountains before coming back down to Troutville, which is near Roanoke and I-81.<br />
<br />
The mountain riding was scenic and while some of the up-and-downs were steep, none of the climbs were that long, and I made good time. <br />
<br />
I had ridden 70 miles by 12:30. In all, I rode 87 miles. I'm staying in a nice town park and took a shower at the firehouse. The Appalachian Trail also runs through this town so they are set up to host both hikers and bikers.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I'll have a shorter day to Vesuvius, which is at the base of a much ballyhooed climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFf5Hk4samPLneyIgk3wwzO-wtzOfMnXwZmk9Ahud8MKg0SBEkC6zFmOfrKf9LtKLxmpbyLZa5OKpFda74Cp5eGVzmOk0pLaYLX85CXEo3t6TO4bzCPP9YNoV2-qpJLIeM5Ih4DbUFuEdh/s640/blogger-image--325619601.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFf5Hk4samPLneyIgk3wwzO-wtzOfMnXwZmk9Ahud8MKg0SBEkC6zFmOfrKf9LtKLxmpbyLZa5OKpFda74Cp5eGVzmOk0pLaYLX85CXEo3t6TO4bzCPP9YNoV2-qpJLIeM5Ih4DbUFuEdh/s640/blogger-image--325619601.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhReM0rhnLi2fqaLg9EuYvDcL-4xp0HX1ERzm8aHQ0a8w2UloasBboxRMaCLoHj4-2adhtHzaqDxn6zPIS15TyM3ipyJRB39dMtmmpf_i47b5Yo2LYlLO9Xxrm_rUqlepQQVrEZ2HVD9Nf/s640/blogger-image-314843309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhReM0rhnLi2fqaLg9EuYvDcL-4xp0HX1ERzm8aHQ0a8w2UloasBboxRMaCLoHj4-2adhtHzaqDxn6zPIS15TyM3ipyJRB39dMtmmpf_i47b5Yo2LYlLO9Xxrm_rUqlepQQVrEZ2HVD9Nf/s640/blogger-image-314843309.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLLVqKMF7OT5H2chYEkj43l53GWkH7knd_wceoP_PptvQBAvTutKWichZWYZ1KfYlxnISf1ed80If2Rfi89mCa50jpHsrUxmlEldToKQttCpzPG4X3I5eo2Q0fG8VmApZEq1EMiVAooCm/s640/blogger-image--1674506833.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLLVqKMF7OT5H2chYEkj43l53GWkH7knd_wceoP_PptvQBAvTutKWichZWYZ1KfYlxnISf1ed80If2Rfi89mCa50jpHsrUxmlEldToKQttCpzPG4X3I5eo2Q0fG8VmApZEq1EMiVAooCm/s640/blogger-image--1674506833.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-18929815219805354092012-08-07T13:52:00.001-07:002012-08-07T13:52:28.598-07:00Rosedale to Max Meadows, Va. - Aug. 7The church had a cupboard-full of food for bikers. I got up at 5:30 and made pancakes and drank coffee while waiting for it to get light enough to ride. <br />
<br />
I left around 6:30 and rode up a 2-mile climb toward Hayter's Gap. Some westbound riders couldn't say enough about how hard this climb was, but it wasn't as long for eastbound riders and it was a neat switch-backy ride up and down.<br />
<br />
I decided not to go to Damascus, opting to travel Route 11 for a while. This road runs parallel to I-81 and shaves off about 20 miles and also avoids some major hills. We took this route in 1987.<br />
<br />
It was smooth sailing along Route 11 and I was in Wytheville at 12:30, having ridden some 75 miles. <br />
<br />
I'm staying in a hotel about 15 miles from Wytheville, near I-81.<br />
<br />

My hoped-for starting time of daybreak came and went with it still raining and me still waiting. I didn't feel like starting out in the rain and was hoping things would clear up. <br />
<br />
After rinsing off my muddy tent, I finally got packed and left around 10:30.<br />
<br />
At first, it wasn't raining, but then it started drizzling and pretty much kept drizzling all day. Once when it really poured for a while I sheltered under an abandoned car wash. <br />
<br />
I wasn't rained on for the last 15 miles and got to a church in Rosedale at about 4:30. I had been hoping to go about 30 miles more to Damascus, but decided just to stay. <br />
<br />
In 1987 the church had bikers stay in a cabin in the back, but now I'm right in the church. It is nice to be inside and completely dry. The sun has actually come out and is drying my tent stuff.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow I'll have some climbing to do but hope to at least make it to Troutdale, if not beyond.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbj2qvOgvhZ3ZnHqVhkzLYxf10_qM13fQCISRTN8HbkJmOzHzstcPU53Y9cC9yHH9LJObnx2Y8fhyphenhyphenhdRaUlAxP9MBKs9rLhQIqgXy7oVo50xQuUegXbD3SXI85tn926yKFwR3LLeJWVyAl/s640/blogger-image-239133128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbj2qvOgvhZ3ZnHqVhkzLYxf10_qM13fQCISRTN8HbkJmOzHzstcPU53Y9cC9yHH9LJObnx2Y8fhyphenhyphenhdRaUlAxP9MBKs9rLhQIqgXy7oVo50xQuUegXbD3SXI85tn926yKFwR3LLeJWVyAl/s640/blogger-image-239133128.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNshNLSUgVhuuTyXFBn6d0wrpqG7m-PAXgTeB-y3w4nzvkt7TWz1JyJqchC5UxD2NfxgvXQHZyx8XSbB29ojjAWMExfi5DA_M-cGZHQ9G0fciDnKWk0YB8ze6J0vdM1c0iiHazWm-RUmJD/s640/blogger-image-1643988111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNshNLSUgVhuuTyXFBn6d0wrpqG7m-PAXgTeB-y3w4nzvkt7TWz1JyJqchC5UxD2NfxgvXQHZyx8XSbB29ojjAWMExfi5DA_M-cGZHQ9G0fciDnKWk0YB8ze6J0vdM1c0iiHazWm-RUmJD/s640/blogger-image-1643988111.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAN55Bx3b6-ryJ5UlUqfgH5pS0wfIM6Mu_iVKRyQ5l8th6HaWPkl6hHGqczbgjS1-oL_ZKR767ZwSf0_o9FCSWQBnPyPEvCklUn6Fgib69WkskHOYr1bmaEL8SOaGfctMsVpvJJnTEgGdg/s640/blogger-image--113953262.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAN55Bx3b6-ryJ5UlUqfgH5pS0wfIM6Mu_iVKRyQ5l8th6HaWPkl6hHGqczbgjS1-oL_ZKR767ZwSf0_o9FCSWQBnPyPEvCklUn6Fgib69WkskHOYr1bmaEL8SOaGfctMsVpvJJnTEgGdg/s640/blogger-image--113953262.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOaAF7ur3I5SK2Wir4c1yuFFAXyqgDQGVZn5O1gKoilcFUs-RqpDSBUGirpuBMw1zovbhXc2UrEn2RyRzsTBDljNzq_VFpdwXGCQImHV-VMfksLriQHDMI0Wse0nsrGhjNATJDJ46cIpN/s640/blogger-image-1475117198.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOaAF7ur3I5SK2Wir4c1yuFFAXyqgDQGVZn5O1gKoilcFUs-RqpDSBUGirpuBMw1zovbhXc2UrEn2RyRzsTBDljNzq_VFpdwXGCQImHV-VMfksLriQHDMI0Wse0nsrGhjNATJDJ46cIpN/s640/blogger-image-1475117198.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-29087066925077183732012-08-05T14:10:00.001-07:002012-08-05T15:12:09.049-07:00Hindman, Ky., to Breaks, Va.Well, I made it to Virginia, although today was something of a struggle.<br />
<br />
I had been watching the weather and knew there would be a good chance of some rain. I had ridden 37 miles when the first showers came ... just as I was pulling under a convenience store awning. The timing was absolutely perfect; I didn't get hit by a single drop.<br />
<br />
Further up the road, a pavilion appeared just as another shower was starting. Unfortunately, this good luck wouldn't last.<br />
<br />
I was climbing one of four, steep 1-to-2--mile hills when it started raining again. I had nowhere to go and put on my poncho and thought of just kind of standing under a tree. But then I just decided to ride, knowing the town of Lookout was not far ahead. I got to the top of the hill and began descending very, very slowly. <br />
<br />
Then, it started going rough, and lo and behold I discovered that I had a flat tire in the back. Now, I've never actually changed a flat tire in my life, and I wasn't too concerned about this lack of experience since dad had changed scores of them in his life. <br />
<br />
The conditions were not ideal for my first attempt. I was on a really steep downhill slope and it was raining and there was no shoulder on the road. Initially, I kind of leaned my bike against the side of the slope and took off my packs. After much struggle, I found that the leak was right at the valve stem, so I just decided to put in a new tube. <br />
<br />
After struggling to get the tube in correctly and the tire back together, I pumped it up. But in no time, it was flat again. So I took it all apart again, and found there was a small hole in the tube. Maybe I pinched it. I briefly tried to patch the tube, but then abandoned that idea and just used the other spare tube I had. It was hard to wedge everything back together and once I had pumped it up, I didn't feel too confident. (How can you be sure you're not pinching the tube when you pry the tire back in place with those little pry bars?!)<br />
<br />
At least an hour had passed during this process, and a couple people stopped to ask if I needed help. Both times I was on the verge of apparent success and declined. I finally got everything back together -- it had stopped raining by now -- and headed on. At the store and at several points along the way, I stopped to see I it was still holding air, and it was. <br />
<br />
I stopped in Elkhorn City at about 2:30 for a huge meal of chicken and dumplings, waiting inside while it started to rain again outside. Since the forecast was for more rain in the evening, I wanted to get to my destination as soon as I could.<br />
<br />
After Elkhorn City, I crossed into Virginia and took some pictures at a point when the sun had actually come out and I was sweating like crazy. I made it up some annoying hills to Breaks Interstate Park and got a site just as it was about to start raining again. I hustled to set up the tent and threw my stuff in as it started to pour. <br />
<br />
It has been raining off and on for the last little bit as I've been sitting in my tent. My stuff is mostly dry, so that is good. The weather report is calling for more rain overnight, but clearing off somewhat in the morning. That's good, since I have an ambitious goal of making it to Damascus, which is about 80 miles away, over some good-size hills.<br />
<br />
Today's terrain wasn't actually that bad. There were those four hills, but then there were nice, long downhills and them narrow valleys where it is possible to really motor.<br />
<br />
I was glad to hear that dad's surgery went well today. I missed him in more ways than one, wishing that I had watched more closely when he was changing his flat tire in Pueblo, at the Subway, where there were nice tables and shade.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNKQiCsjcu5u6zbtikKotjxjQXgtYD_5MWEYObLlF5MPTh3ckrzWHjWq4OosVtwEF2mnlWxjLWeb9yBxzdYhSYmBlxsRZUBbSz6ESHDPmHRhB1Eql51jLZaeGnkUXd-R8vJv2ABSXR0Xxb/s640/blogger-image--1745374320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNKQiCsjcu5u6zbtikKotjxjQXgtYD_5MWEYObLlF5MPTh3ckrzWHjWq4OosVtwEF2mnlWxjLWeb9yBxzdYhSYmBlxsRZUBbSz6ESHDPmHRhB1Eql51jLZaeGnkUXd-R8vJv2ABSXR0Xxb/s640/blogger-image--1745374320.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6Ktr82AZLw2Q8b-GlFCJgk7qLHiby6rcygrcWEph5f8x1ReIEA4npKL-VOCJp7ayg1g-YprGdFMlOP64bQnVt0a6A4QbWTscuU-PZfNGPcALh5LPnOecEp-tTQpRwDM5pBetgtsbL1Is/s640/blogger-image-2021591419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6Ktr82AZLw2Q8b-GlFCJgk7qLHiby6rcygrcWEph5f8x1ReIEA4npKL-VOCJp7ayg1g-YprGdFMlOP64bQnVt0a6A4QbWTscuU-PZfNGPcALh5LPnOecEp-tTQpRwDM5pBetgtsbL1Is/s640/blogger-image-2021591419.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqRfuuUGblDIbTZrbj_plBs-63TCtwrm6w_JwUoixmMfvGmcSac5yho7nJgIYTeSOe8fqNQ00uBNR5sCLAC7_fosHamsiIUtbgf1M1Kkbdjsbk4BjraqW21c5e_qtHoBUhhxiGe6oWQAoH/s640/blogger-image-228929904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqRfuuUGblDIbTZrbj_plBs-63TCtwrm6w_JwUoixmMfvGmcSac5yho7nJgIYTeSOe8fqNQ00uBNR5sCLAC7_fosHamsiIUtbgf1M1Kkbdjsbk4BjraqW21c5e_qtHoBUhhxiGe6oWQAoH/s640/blogger-image-228929904.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEiBgRi1LWWT5f0_6zjVACE6qpNQ0oQ5HjcEcpOxqjyN32TCZ5orx9WGSScO2DHva6qsyOlXQ1B8AncldNo9ETDhT04agkCMrM6SHKNlNHvQc-f_ujHNx-U1S8TwY-q_bYm3O6MHugHl3P/s640/blogger-image-646497444.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEiBgRi1LWWT5f0_6zjVACE6qpNQ0oQ5HjcEcpOxqjyN32TCZ5orx9WGSScO2DHva6qsyOlXQ1B8AncldNo9ETDhT04agkCMrM6SHKNlNHvQc-f_ujHNx-U1S8TwY-q_bYm3O6MHugHl3P/s640/blogger-image-646497444.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSONkgFnSomz_Plk3xrZL46SwL3xBqEp_-8D_gBIzDR9MkH-4vc3Yn6aWVb7oituShnI_PpHGZ17k6eWJjhqV3qiHxsyh7PWMVG0dOfScxJ_FrPK646_GrS6KNrSt2Bg3DRZ36Lqh7EElG/s640/blogger-image--793913951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSONkgFnSomz_Plk3xrZL46SwL3xBqEp_-8D_gBIzDR9MkH-4vc3Yn6aWVb7oituShnI_PpHGZ17k6eWJjhqV3qiHxsyh7PWMVG0dOfScxJ_FrPK646_GrS6KNrSt2Bg3DRZ36Lqh7EElG/s640/blogger-image--793913951.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikIyAWa_U0m-SCVyXb5-17d-VxYEnPQzNNLnTaE0NWzwhN7v_T-47WvQeqHe7T65gLTFL8J18sNioLT87p-KoeRnTPN6fG9jRwVwYxQ8ML7yujEjM8mdWTKhEz6J6eE3IDiCtpEtsluix5/s640/blogger-image-800519313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikIyAWa_U0m-SCVyXb5-17d-VxYEnPQzNNLnTaE0NWzwhN7v_T-47WvQeqHe7T65gLTFL8J18sNioLT87p-KoeRnTPN6fG9jRwVwYxQ8ML7yujEjM8mdWTKhEz6J6eE3IDiCtpEtsluix5/s640/blogger-image-800519313.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-71003939689872358492012-08-04T13:54:00.001-07:002012-08-04T14:33:27.924-07:00Booneville to Hindman, Ky. - Aug. 4Today was the first day of riding without dad. I talked to him tonight and described the riding day. <br />
<br />
The hills were tough, but came in several section of summits, with some breaks in between of riding in sorts of valleys. Plus, the longer climbs usually mean an equal and opposite downhill, which quickly eats up miles. I hadn't started quite as early as usual, but was in Hindman, 64 miles away, by 2:30.<br />
<br />
It felt familiar to be on the road, riding, but it also felt strange to be riding alone. While I had planned to ride alone from Yorktown, Va., to Lancaster, I wasn't supposed to be on my own now. It makes me sad to think about not being able to complete the trip with dad. <br />
<br />
However, I was also thinking that the point of a trip like this is not just getting to the end. While we had been looking forward to the last day --especially recently -- the last day would have come and gone just like all the other days. It's hard not to focus on the end of the trip, but the trip is so much bigger than just one day. <br />
<br />
For example, when I think back to the 1987 trip, I think more often about the experiences along the way than I do about what it was like to actually get to the end. Don't get me wrong, it is a real disappointment that dad won't be able to finish the trip, but it doesn't change the point of the trip: to build some bicycling memories with my dad while reconnecting with the 1987 trip. <br />
<br />
Tonight, I'm staying at a bicyclist hostel in Hindman, Ky., up a very steep, but short hill. Currently, I'm sitting outside, under an umbrella, on a soft chair, with some cold drinks, watching men's Olympic volleyball, surrounded by slumbering cats.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow, I plan to ride to Breaks Interstate Park, which is in Virginia. There seems to be the possibility of some rainstorms tomorrow, so I'll have to watch for that. Hopefully, I can start early and hunker down at the end to weather any storms. Or, there will be some places where I can duck in for cover along the way, if need be. <br />

We went over some good-sized hills, but also enjoyed some nice downhills. It started to rain slightly when we were getting into Booneville.<br />
<br />
We both got the catfish special in town (deep fried, of course) and then went back to Booneville Presbyterian Church, which lets bicyclists camp in the back.<br />
<br />
I rode up first to the church, going around it up a sloping hill, noticing that my tires spun on the slippery pavement and then discovering a dead-end that forced me to loop back around, down the hill. I eventually got to the back and found a nice pavilion and grassy area for camping as well as a shower. They didn't have that 25 years ago.<br />
<br />
Dad was slow in coming so I went back to check on him. He was sitting on the driveway, right by a sharp left turn that came down the hill from the church, right at the "Cyclists Welcome" sign. His bike was also laying on the ground. I asked if he was OK, and he said, "I'm not sure."<br />
<br />
He had fallen on the slippery pavement while making the sharp left turn. He said he couldn't put weight on his leg, but also said it didn't seem as bad as when he had broken his other hip a couple years ago while shoveling snow.<br />
<br />
At first we tried having him hold onto the bicycle while I wheeled it back to the camp. That didn't work. Then we tried just having him lean on me and try to walk that way. That didn't work either. At one point he started crawling, but it was clear pretty soon that this wasn't the kind of injury that would be OK following a long afternoon of rest. So I called 911 and was patched through to the local ambulance service, which sent over an ambulance to take him to the hospital.<br />
<br />
The hospital was in Jackson, about 30 minutes away. I wasn't sure what I should do, but we decided I'd stay and just wait to hear how serious it was. <br />
<br />
Well, he did, indeed, break his hip. He said the doctors wanted to take him to Lexington to have screws put in. In the meantime, mom had been called. She was at some kind of music workshop in West Virginia and was headed for Pennsylvania, but turned and headed toward us.<br />
<br />
After more than two months and 3,500 miles, dad and I had settled into a way of life that had come to feel routine. We'd get ready when it was still dark and start riding as soon as it got light. We'd been riding for so far and had gone through so many places that the beginning of the trip had started to seem like another trip, it was so long ago.<br />
<br />
We were both thinking more and more about getting to the end. Two nights ago we got out all of our last maps, spread them out on the table and calculated how far we would ride each remaining day and where we'd stay. We figured out that we could finish with a short day into Yorktown, Va., on August 13. Things were wrapping up.<br />
The end was in sight.<br />
<br />
Now, suddenly, there's a very different end in sight. I plan to continue the trip from here, and if I don't see dad in Yorktown, I'll see him when I ride up from Virginia to New Holland on the final leg of my trip.<br />
<br />
It's hard to believe that this is how it is going to be. It's depressing, actually.<br />
<br />
We made a pretty low-key bicycling duo, having similar ideas about how and when to ride, moving along with minimum hardship. <br />
<br />
We were so comfortable together that I took him for granted. I'm going to miss him the rest of the way.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe5UidVmThOHcVVgE-v9w_2pXXiizJ8h66-NLBE5ZPDwWIzL8s_K1fsr3nh6wDz_DLT1gtFIVKxmun6assbRjo7jnyjJY2Rbg-o1cTpTGeMBMLZqQbNMYCgnkIKnJ7-_zj6ikdw-UkoFgm/s640/blogger-image-934492148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe5UidVmThOHcVVgE-v9w_2pXXiizJ8h66-NLBE5ZPDwWIzL8s_K1fsr3nh6wDz_DLT1gtFIVKxmun6assbRjo7jnyjJY2Rbg-o1cTpTGeMBMLZqQbNMYCgnkIKnJ7-_zj6ikdw-UkoFgm/s640/blogger-image-934492148.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVxmvFxqaNWILNp7vN628QqejjdSLujpcEuKBhiNwtjTo-YDOH7qTw6eJ_kV82wD3Aur4GqZ3MI2gxIrDtO4oAR69L5HnZChuT_PHX_JrWOjOYfq0e36Jwye1SzGN_kwAejKfPqeHu7xbf/s640/blogger-image-26754990.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVxmvFxqaNWILNp7vN628QqejjdSLujpcEuKBhiNwtjTo-YDOH7qTw6eJ_kV82wD3Aur4GqZ3MI2gxIrDtO4oAR69L5HnZChuT_PHX_JrWOjOYfq0e36Jwye1SzGN_kwAejKfPqeHu7xbf/s640/blogger-image-26754990.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRPMv6AVcSXZ60oS9ve6UcLlnu-nUlJnhsZG5FrTREjUdCXZdpCTFzYcaGQc5Oue0EHUa5yi3b7CpSMifySkeFo4flmn3b_DERxXjl0xxHb8FFovV_czOpvFWDwoLwIowB8XvomnRmFi2c/s640/blogger-image-84366105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRPMv6AVcSXZ60oS9ve6UcLlnu-nUlJnhsZG5FrTREjUdCXZdpCTFzYcaGQc5Oue0EHUa5yi3b7CpSMifySkeFo4flmn3b_DERxXjl0xxHb8FFovV_czOpvFWDwoLwIowB8XvomnRmFi2c/s640/blogger-image-84366105.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-73718623301616626412012-08-02T15:09:00.001-07:002012-08-02T16:42:22.496-07:00Lincoln Homestead to Berea, Ky. - Aug. 2It seems like the very first westbound biker we met went on and on about how tough the Appalachians are. "They're so steep," they said. "They're much harder than the Rockies," they emphasized.<br />
<br />
Well, we'll see if these hills can live up to their incredible hype. I suspect that since the Appalachians are the first hills that westbound riders climb, they make an oversized impression on these cyclists. I mean, we've climbed hills of every shape, size, steepness and length. What could possibly be so hard about the Appalachians?!<br />
<br />
We biked about 70 miles to Berea, which is considered the route's "Gateway to the Appalachians," and which brought on my earlier comments.<br />
<br />
The riding was pretty nice. I did notice the hills getting steeper, but it wasn't so blazing hot, which helps. We also started out riding when it was still foggy, which made everything look cool.<br />
<br />
The camping options are spread in the next map section, which dictates how far we can ride. For us, this means a couple shorter days ahead. Tomorrow we'll probably go to Booneville and camp at the Baptist church. We did this in 1987, an event that was memorable because grandma and grandpa Umble met us there.<br />

I got a new tire there and dad rotated his, so we are both set. <br />
<br />
After that we just kept riding, passing through Bardstown and then finally about 20 miles out of town to a park marking where Lincoln's parents grew up. In all, We did about 70 miles.<br />
<br />
We were chased by a couple dogs and I was glad to be able to get a video of the one chase and post it on my Facebook page. If you see it, note the point where the dogs almost collide.<br />
<br />
I set up my tent under a tree on a gently sloping hill.<br />
<br />
Tonight we got out the maps and were sketching out our days for the rest of the trip. We may be able to have a short, last day on Monday, August 13. It's been a great trip, but we're both thinking more often about the end.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow, we plan to ride to Berea.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKjjWUXMT92P9O_uXfsREBhIUjutSH0bhzk0sNQFLntjxdMD9Fs7Ve-5oKeg4-vNOk0rR9sopxqkpQvP8EuEoKgQ-4YDZ48j-r2B5zjq_y6WQvWRQ7u77PrRIQ0Zohqo2UIJDqEt_rxUP/s640/blogger-image--1038505961.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKjjWUXMT92P9O_uXfsREBhIUjutSH0bhzk0sNQFLntjxdMD9Fs7Ve-5oKeg4-vNOk0rR9sopxqkpQvP8EuEoKgQ-4YDZ48j-r2B5zjq_y6WQvWRQ7u77PrRIQ0Zohqo2UIJDqEt_rxUP/s640/blogger-image--1038505961.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEM3DAMrvddPbgCnNhxf5Y0OrIVAMvWT9IkyOt8lRNafTPPTa7_2uCgW7Zdr-cda2QWt9w6_Aj7k2Bd2Y_BS9bpf_clirxDOpKBH0-_4XU7v955XGAQHSp5KVaFvX9esQSh2kkighPHzTS/s640/blogger-image-898382260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEM3DAMrvddPbgCnNhxf5Y0OrIVAMvWT9IkyOt8lRNafTPPTa7_2uCgW7Zdr-cda2QWt9w6_Aj7k2Bd2Y_BS9bpf_clirxDOpKBH0-_4XU7v955XGAQHSp5KVaFvX9esQSh2kkighPHzTS/s640/blogger-image-898382260.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Z5wwHeScZFLiv_Qk57nbaOTcRmTO8toi1wVOOk_vrwk7konxQudRM-9SN0S4zaa4KClDO12ZvlxgAo5zvHjk1M_8OlA2t8ag5R3_sBV6joylFzJbVIg9d3OhROx0V4r0PUm-9s2u098U/s640/blogger-image-143336608.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Z5wwHeScZFLiv_Qk57nbaOTcRmTO8toi1wVOOk_vrwk7konxQudRM-9SN0S4zaa4KClDO12ZvlxgAo5zvHjk1M_8OlA2t8ag5R3_sBV6joylFzJbVIg9d3OhROx0V4r0PUm-9s2u098U/s640/blogger-image-143336608.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-38702137999566522562012-07-31T13:25:00.001-07:002012-07-31T13:39:21.924-07:00Utica to Hudson, Ky. - July 31This morning before leaving, we noticed that my back tire is quite worn, alarmingly so. It made it through a 70-mile day, but we decided to take a slight detour tomorrow to go to a bike shop in Elizabethtown, about 20 miles away up Route 62 so I can get a new one.<br />
<br />
As it turns out, the detour will actually save us some miles and we'll return to the route at Bardstown.<br />
<br />
The ride today got slightly hillier later on, and without any clouds, it started to get warm. We crossed into the Eastern time zone just before we arrived at the Double L Grocery store, where we understand bicyclists can camp. The owner isn't here just yet, so we've been sitting inside, watching Olympic water polo, rowing and beach volleyball. <br />
<br />
Tomorrow, we may ride a bit beyond Bardstown, setting us up to get to Berea on Friday.<br />
<br />
The infamous "Kentucky Dogs" have been a real disappointment so far: we didn't get chased at all, so no pics or videos of that.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz72YY2fUfvOhWI05Q7Uq8H0H3FmobKfN92QqXwPt7cxhHoYOmsQur64VV5U6-JV3PxzgVzwYM7PqCNv7G3BfietuPAWryx_aDY3ReBv1pymTbLfJurRoHsUqAF34-66Q6zO8_lNOE4IbY/s640/blogger-image-1124817790.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz72YY2fUfvOhWI05Q7Uq8H0H3FmobKfN92QqXwPt7cxhHoYOmsQur64VV5U6-JV3PxzgVzwYM7PqCNv7G3BfietuPAWryx_aDY3ReBv1pymTbLfJurRoHsUqAF34-66Q6zO8_lNOE4IbY/s640/blogger-image-1124817790.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdTr5MxP3k1z2BoHdC2dnTnHVcGbcedLRgCdmI4JrKtT4asfNvS2SqXhOvtmw6f4rJn-ZqnMXElUGg8HgEU1JpcmFZoufVZxuUfK7u8NIOYuOWbTud1wUHYb6I7vcgjP_jQggRhUaaYq8X/s640/blogger-image-1839552558.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdTr5MxP3k1z2BoHdC2dnTnHVcGbcedLRgCdmI4JrKtT4asfNvS2SqXhOvtmw6f4rJn-ZqnMXElUGg8HgEU1JpcmFZoufVZxuUfK7u8NIOYuOWbTud1wUHYb6I7vcgjP_jQggRhUaaYq8X/s640/blogger-image-1839552558.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN1FXc_QmqaHkEMsop_cq7Jz-8T-2i_eg5y-8JDer2g4dy_ggLH9d4y60g-TH5EX5Kr9YPVnb927SmElPhnu8wWZZJS-pfa5YoDSZoZXx3TRy1ySEFDlW8enAY_0615mfDFpwrsA1QkRvC/s640/blogger-image--1862275551.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN1FXc_QmqaHkEMsop_cq7Jz-8T-2i_eg5y-8JDer2g4dy_ggLH9d4y60g-TH5EX5Kr9YPVnb927SmElPhnu8wWZZJS-pfa5YoDSZoZXx3TRy1ySEFDlW8enAY_0615mfDFpwrsA1QkRvC/s640/blogger-image--1862275551.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWDl528C9wlpiRh4_o9TSZmoqMKlMOYUKlUChCkN9NewxqKLomkR9daUxBv-TenWP0dKLomwncvwK7fcHA9p1bpEY9nvrdh9JUeWQR2XqhbdOufO08AUE4HXOe6FUx2I3oa1FpgZ2df9Ej/s640/blogger-image--1035411792.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWDl528C9wlpiRh4_o9TSZmoqMKlMOYUKlUChCkN9NewxqKLomkR9daUxBv-TenWP0dKLomwncvwK7fcHA9p1bpEY9nvrdh9JUeWQR2XqhbdOufO08AUE4HXOe6FUx2I3oa1FpgZ2df9Ej/s640/blogger-image--1035411792.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-82488001789902083982012-07-30T16:36:00.001-07:002012-07-30T16:36:12.775-07:00Marion to Utica, Ky. - July 30Today's ride of 71 miles was largely uneventful, taking us through some gently rolling hills as well as some downright flat areas in western Kentucky.<br />
<br />
I was on the lookout for dogs, but only saw these two curious dogs at one convenience store stop. Dad was briefly chased by one, but it didn't make a real effort.<br />
<br />
It was overcast for most of the day, which helped keep the temperature manageable.<br />
<br />
We had 60 miles in by noon, finishing our day in Utica around 1 p.m. We're staying at the fire station here where the program is to just walk in the unlocked doors and make yourself at home. <br />
<br />
I've been looking ahead more to how long it will take us to get to Yorktown, Va. It'll probably be about two weeks yet. Since that will get us back earlier than expected, I'm going to ride from there back up to Lancaster, going through D.C. and Baltimore on a route mapped out by Adventure Cycling, whose maps we have been following. Dad is just going to get a ride home from Yorktown.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow we plan to ride to a grocery store near the town of Hudson where we hear it is possible to camp. There aren't many other options in the area.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgojP1gen0S6Gppt_1Cxf6D8wR3bFJ7n9by6BPZ0ZQWNJ1x-Rork9PZYAQrXeRihAyCjLDXO9KeJ9pmun5JSeNSFKH-M0YCUnjuuFAjE97g396KGXf5ywCqSc7-HWBYLrZWy2ea1gO7Iwyl/s640/blogger-image-1392614605.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgojP1gen0S6Gppt_1Cxf6D8wR3bFJ7n9by6BPZ0ZQWNJ1x-Rork9PZYAQrXeRihAyCjLDXO9KeJ9pmun5JSeNSFKH-M0YCUnjuuFAjE97g396KGXf5ywCqSc7-HWBYLrZWy2ea1gO7Iwyl/s640/blogger-image-1392614605.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdosxb1TyejQeztk75iY8i91T5wv18Osmauf6b7mmnDuxHKu4h6BZpymZSICoGDg5It8GT5hPPMuvKbJXXRMcneJp2a2DhS7tw3EWypx0QqCNqRurK-tLQvsa-sPGWMlWX9hGwd_9tg1HF/s640/blogger-image-1434566531.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdosxb1TyejQeztk75iY8i91T5wv18Osmauf6b7mmnDuxHKu4h6BZpymZSICoGDg5It8GT5hPPMuvKbJXXRMcneJp2a2DhS7tw3EWypx0QqCNqRurK-tLQvsa-sPGWMlWX9hGwd_9tg1HF/s640/blogger-image-1434566531.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRK_D-rbWZTxxjv1N-gVepKpLmoquCWJkz2I_N5gydhduGLfUebafVcQuErZWo-NKIP-v19RpZpFCdckBZy0N6h3KsHUIuNc_L3zKFfxhVWAMFmpomrxqph1j2xMZ818A8cP_0kJqeEQjR/s640/blogger-image-1638713654.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRK_D-rbWZTxxjv1N-gVepKpLmoquCWJkz2I_N5gydhduGLfUebafVcQuErZWo-NKIP-v19RpZpFCdckBZy0N6h3KsHUIuNc_L3zKFfxhVWAMFmpomrxqph1j2xMZ818A8cP_0kJqeEQjR/s640/blogger-image-1638713654.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglsrdE5RufWubLsCllz0iF5WPCKB3Ji3nDilYfyw_sxVPc-qZ6-tV22t9lz3c3UeZOFzX1CktPG6RHxtglQtucpIG6RfG3u4m1NP4ihZMBN8jjCz07sRwVJZFeVO_q6rMqfPUWue87iLKs/s640/blogger-image--76383082.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglsrdE5RufWubLsCllz0iF5WPCKB3Ji3nDilYfyw_sxVPc-qZ6-tV22t9lz3c3UeZOFzX1CktPG6RHxtglQtucpIG6RfG3u4m1NP4ihZMBN8jjCz07sRwVJZFeVO_q6rMqfPUWue87iLKs/s640/blogger-image--76383082.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4DCA45ss3hwQbUcks2SCPBgQICSnQLaorV8H8Zs-rUeTV4b31TD5RAhf7oYdBmu4pobPCDlV8L5uFEAteYk7T6xY5OyRvoZ8eZnB4E7gKyPCABd5MRiCUvUvGWpNf1f01iYQG2YEm-0lV/s640/blogger-image-898296501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4DCA45ss3hwQbUcks2SCPBgQICSnQLaorV8H8Zs-rUeTV4b31TD5RAhf7oYdBmu4pobPCDlV8L5uFEAteYk7T6xY5OyRvoZ8eZnB4E7gKyPCABd5MRiCUvUvGWpNf1f01iYQG2YEm-0lV/s640/blogger-image-898296501.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZSRLT4bBsNqraGH3sI5WhOgva0Q6UNAbQTZ4m2wdrMnQf58VoTzGnq4_iiU_yc9-86QSXtZiXcl79Z3D5dqHG10lYmkyx732UMN0YJidIpj5OYp8KnArBYpMsq9O0rXXihnxwOUgfktFB/s640/blogger-image-1606590859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZSRLT4bBsNqraGH3sI5WhOgva0Q6UNAbQTZ4m2wdrMnQf58VoTzGnq4_iiU_yc9-86QSXtZiXcl79Z3D5dqHG10lYmkyx732UMN0YJidIpj5OYp8KnArBYpMsq9O0rXXihnxwOUgfktFB/s640/blogger-image-1606590859.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4R8_d4YknPJFPc7aPPrWCtcsJ84q5anEXrIIWD7jpLyxSA2IdQtXQe6_YUZ2nn3gHjOdd2Ws-D6fGKMoib7A-qTiGuGIkCycrUkp5nyW6D75ADw8OhhleaZdvGVN3x8jmb2RWaovcKsFn/s640/blogger-image-291864208.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4R8_d4YknPJFPc7aPPrWCtcsJ84q5anEXrIIWD7jpLyxSA2IdQtXQe6_YUZ2nn3gHjOdd2Ws-D6fGKMoib7A-qTiGuGIkCycrUkp5nyW6D75ADw8OhhleaZdvGVN3x8jmb2RWaovcKsFn/s640/blogger-image-291864208.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12128120800456465110noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7792635186267953808.post-38335831497814506872012-07-29T17:48:00.001-07:002012-07-29T17:54:03.456-07:00Goreville, IL, to Marion, Ky. - July 29It was overcast for most of the day, so it was cooler. The high temperature was just in the 90s, and it was comfortable. <br />
<br />
We had to ride over a few hills, and some of them were steep, but they didn't make much of an impression on me. It seems like we'll have gently rolling hills until we get more into the Appalachians in a couple days.<br />
<br />
We also crossed into Kentucky, our penultimate state. Although we go the long way through Kentucky and Virginia, it makes it seem like the trip is nearing the end. <br />
<br />
To get to Kentucky, we crossed the Ohio River on a ferry boat.<br />
<br />
We're staying inside at a church in Marion, set up in a room with six couches. We made pizza in the church's kitchen and I quizzed dad on whether he thinks he's eating enough. He probably isn't, even though his half of the pizza had 800 calories, which he followed with a big bowl of butter pecan ice cream.<br />
<br />
We weren't chased by any dogs today, but probably will be soon. For cyclists, Kentucky is known as the place where dogs like to run after you. I'm hoping to get some action photos or videos of these events, so stay tuned.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow we plan to ride to the little town of Utica where we hear cyclists can stay in a firehouse.<br />
<br />
Also, that's a picture of my bike and loaded gear.<br />
